Getting your kids to bathe can be a time suck and a challenge — but if they don’t, they’re gonna stink. Fortunately, we have a quick and easy solution that can help you keep your morning routine as streamlined as possible!
The problem
As we discussed in a previous post, since mornings can be so hectic, it’s not uncommon nowadays for parents to have their kids bathe the night before. That way, all they have to do in the morning is splash some water on their face, apply their deodorant, throw on some clothes, and walk out the door. It makes a ton of sense from a practical perspective, but is this approach going to keep them odor-free all day? Not so much.
You see, no matter how clean their bed may be, the fact remains that us humans sweat while we sleep, even if just a small amount. When that happens, the bacteria show up and start snacking on that sweat, which starts the timer on the inevitable B.O. arrival.
And the thing with deodorant is that it works well to prevent new bacteria from popping up, but it can’t do much to get rid of bacteria that’s already there. So when you apply it to skin that’s not been freshly cleaned, its effectiveness throughout the day will be limited.
This means that even if your kiddos still smell fresh first thing in the morning despite not having showered since the night before, by mid-morning or early-afternoon they’re going to be smelling pretty ripe, even if they’ve applied deodorant. No bueno!
The solution
Besides having them shower in the mornings instead (which we understand may not be feasible), there is a handy hack to solve this problem: wet wipes!
Even if they haven’t just showered, if your kids take 30 seconds to clean their armpits with a good wet wipe before applying their deodorant, that’s going to remove most of the existing bacteria and let the deo properly do its job to keep them fresh all day.
What to look for
There are tons of wet wipes out there to choose from. Here are a few pointers to help you pick the right one for your kids:
- Don’t choose a flushable wipe — its weaker construction will make it fall apart during that pit-scrubbing action (plus, despite the “flushable” label, they’re not actually good for our sewer system)
- Opt for a larger wipe so that just one can be used for both pits, minimizing waste
- A textured wipe will perform the scrubbing task better than a flat wipe
- Make sure the wipe has some type of soap or surfactant ingredient(s) to help remove grime (some are literally just water, which won’t help much here)
- Look for a wipe that has a lower number of ingredients, and doesn’t say “Fragrance” in the ingredients list (this’ll most likely be artificial fragrance, which could be irritating to your child’s skin)
Give this easy hack a try to make sure your kids stay fresh all day without needing to add complexity to your already-hectic morning routine!
